Does Dubai have any plans to reduce car usage? Do they have plans to add more metro lines soon?

Dubai has always looked for ways to reduce traffic, has been encouraging car share, tried shifting office timings, and introduced different forms of public transport starting with but limited. to Buses, Metros, Trams, bikes, scooters, and even water transport like Abras (Arabic word for water boats).

Dubai Government initiated a new body naming it The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) whose sole role is to work on expanding the metro system and implementing various different modes of travel for public transportation.

Dubai Metro was started 11 years back in the year 2009 with the popularly known Red and Green lines. These lines cater to the main key areas in the city including the main business and residential districts where the Red line runs along the Sheikh Zayed Road and The Green line covers the older parts of Dubai.

Dubai Metro currently spans over 74 kilometers which have been completed in just 4 years. The total rail length is a little over 101 kilometers.

In the past 11 years, Dubai Metro has saved over a billion car rides thus reducing over 2.8 million tones of carbon dioxide emissions which in cumulative financial benefits amounts to over 115 billion dirhams. Dubai Metro serves about 650,000 commuters every day.

Recently RTA extended the Red Line with a new route EXPO 2020 Route and has plans to extend the metro to other parts of Dubai.

In the future, new lines are being planned namely the Purple and Blue lines to further ease congestion and increase connectivity across the city.

The Purple Line will cover areas along Al Khail Road adding six new stations, and reaching out to the border with Abu Dhabi linking The Al Maktoum Airport which is the world's largest airport to Muhaissnah.

There are also plans to add a Blue line which will run along the E311 (Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road.

Additionally, RTA has been introducing new methods such as the introduction of dedicated bus lanes, integration of public transport systems, and promotion of cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, introducing Toll systems to manage traffic congestion and thus achieving their goal to promote sustainable transportation towards their goal of making Dubai a Green City.
