In 2023, millions of passengers using the Terminal 3 will start allowing international passengers walk in through check points without having to show their air tickets or passport. The new technology in place is the face recognition system.

Smart Gate system will initially be available for Emirates Airline Passengers using the Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport and will then be extended to Terminal 1 and 2 to cover passengers of other airlines as well.

Originally launched in 2020 by General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA), the system was used only for UAE, GCC nationals and residents, and from 2023, the system will now allow international and transit passengers to walk through check points at airport without human intervention or the need to have a stamp on the passport.

If registered with smart gate, you can walk in without holding a passport or air ticket, if not, first time international passengers will first have to give their consent for use of their biometric data and provide their face and iris scan which will be uploaded in the system. This can be done using the mobile application on Apple and Android systems or self-check-in kiosks or check in counters of Emirates Airlines.

After you agree to use of your biometric, face recognition and iris data, you can walk in through check points without presenting your passport.
